Texas Tech architecture graduate student, Caleb Lightfoot led a peaceful sit in in the free speech area of campus on Friday morning from 10:00-2:00 PM. Creating the group ‘Lubbock Allies’ the peaceful sit in was aimed at protesting: racism, sexism, and hate. Following the election, Lightfoot said he has felt the need to create a group where fellow students can feel safe and accepted.

“Part of the goal of this, is that there would be a kind of voice, or presence on campus so that if someone is a victim of hate speech they can report it to us, and we have a network of professors and students who can stand with them.” Lightfoot said.

Throughout the day students stopped to sign the group’s email list, as well as pick up shirts that read: “I stand with you.’ The group’s first meeting is in the works, and Lightfoot hopes the group will be considered as an official Tech organization by next semester. Student, Joya Mannan earning her PHD in English, said she sees a need for the group.

“It’s good to have a place for difficult discussions and you may not know where your space is.” Mannon said. “
