College freshmen across the country are upping the stakes on dorm room decor through a friendly social media competition. Students are going above and beyond to take their cement wall dorms to have the best dressed rooms.

Texas Tech students showed EverythingLubbock.com the measures they took to modify their room.

“I didn’t want it to not feel homey because I wanted to feel comfortable coming home and being relaxed,” Texas Tech Freshman Meghana Patl said.

Patl and roommate Maddie Bryan are both Lubbock natives that attended Lubbock Cooper High School together. They said both of their parents and siblings helped move them in on August 20 for over three hours.

“We planned it probably two months before the end of school and we’ve just been on going,” Bryan said. “We’re still going to the store and like this is cute this would be good in our room.”

“We didn’t know originally what all to bring and stuff and so after getting ideas we go shopping we’re like oh this would be cute,” Patl said.

They said they got some of their ideas from friends’ posts on social media, but their biggest inspiration comes from the website Pinterest

“We’ve had older friends go through it and stay in dorms,” Patl said. “We saw their pictures of their dorms and we see things on Pinterest to get ideas.”

They said they made or modified several items in their room, like pillows, paintings, pictures, and hung up fabric as wall paper.

Tech Housing is making a school competition out of it by offering a $1,000 total reward to the “best dressed space.”
