The Texas Tech University Residence Halls Association (RHA), Texas Tech Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) and Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) will host the eighth annual Drag Show at 8 p.m. Wednesday (March 22) in the Student Union Building’s Red Raider Ballroom.
“Drag shows have been a part of our history dating back to the late 1800s,” said Jody Randall, administrator of LGBTQIA. “While the annual spring show at Texas Tech is only in its eighth year, it has become an expected part of campus life and an important fundraiser.”
Drag queens from Club Pink will perform live alongside amateur Texas Tech student acts. Alyssa Edwards, from RuPaul’s Drag Race, will be featured as a special guest performer.
“Throughout the roughly two-hour show, performers give outlandish productions with over-the-top costumes and deliver an educational experience for attendees in bending daily gender norms,” Randall said.
The event is free and open to the Texas Tech and Lubbock community. VIP tickets can be purchased through RHA and GSA for $10 and guarantee a seat at the show, giveaways and meet-and-greets with all the queens post-show.
“I think the annual Texas Tech Drag Show is an incredibly unique event at Texas Tech,” said Walker Williams, GSA vice president. “The Lubbock area is fairly conservative, so we don’t get to see many events that focus on the LGBTQ culture that often, especially not ones that bring in such big crowds.”
All proceeds go to PFLAG Lubbock’s Lola Marie Drew Scholarship fund. The scholarship is awarded annually to a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or ally high school senior or college student in the Lubbock community.
“Attending the show is an excellent way for people to learn a bit more about the culture while also helping a great cause by raising money for PFLAG,” Williams said.
