WHAT:
Texas Tech University Student Housing along with Rubbermaid® Commercial Products (RCP) and Keep America Beautiful are hosting a waste audit in conjunction with RecycleMania, a tournament that encourages colleges and universities to reduce or eliminate waste.
WHEN:
10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday (March 29)
WHERE:
South side of the Student Union Building, dock area
EVENT:
Trash and recyclables will be collected from the Student Union Building over a 24-hour period. Everything will be sorted and weighed individually. All weights will be recorded and the diversion rate, or the amount of waste diverted from a landfill, will be calculated. Prizes will be awarded for various categories, including those who guess the total weight of the recyclables found and total amount of trash.
The purpose is to determine how well Texas Tech recycles its waste while competing against other schools across the U.S. and Canada. RCP will have a recycling truck on campus that media can tour and photograph with samples of recycling systems and waste bin product collections. Representatives will be available to provide advice on implementing recycling solutions
Rod Ford, account manager for RCP and Melanie Tatum, assistant director for University Student Housing will be available for interviews at the event.
All interested students are invited to attend the event. Those interested in volunteering for the event should contact Melanie Tatum at housing.gogreen@ttu.edu.
