It’s looking like a very exciting upcoming weekend here with Garth Brooks and the ABC Rodeo both in town and the rodeo crew has been working hard in order to transform the Coliseum for show time.
Scott Peterson, Chairman of the Rodeo said, “We ran one hundred and one loads of dirt starting at sunrise on Saturday. We finally got all of the dirt in about one thirty on Saturday afternoon and started moving steel and started putting everything together and we finished yesterday. We worked until about 10 o’clock on Saturday and finished yesterday at about six o’clock.”
It takes a lot of work and a dedicated team to ensure that everything is ready to go.
He explained, “We’re a group of about thirty that get it all done from banners being hung, fence being hung. I mean there’s a lot of little things but everybody notices the bucket shoots and the steel that’s up but there’s a lot of little things that have to be done. “
Their efforts extend far beyond the arena.
Peterson told us, “This year is our 75th anniversary, I’m just lucky enough to be the guy that’s in charge this year. Our community was honored on the state senate floor on March the 6th for recognizing the longevity and our contribution to the community and we’ve given 1.5 million dollars to the boys and girls club.”
With Garth in town people are coming from all over to participate in the events.
Peterson said, “We’ve sold a lot of tickets online for people outside the city of Lubbock. We’ve seen a huge increase in the number of tickets sold outside Lubbock county.”
The ABC Rodeo has it all and will even close the show with a freestyle bull fight.
Peterson explained just how dangerous this is,“Everybody else when they get off they run and their job is to get away, those guys, their job is to stay as engaged with that bull as they can to get as many points as they can so a lot of times they get hooked and that’s what people like to see.”
