The Abilene Zoo turned 50-years-old on Saturday.
“Somebody had a great idea 50 years ago and look how far it’s come,” stated Kelly Thompson, zoo marketing and development coordinator.
It’s brought joy to the staff and public alike.
“I really like to see animals everyday. And the fact that you see kids around, is awesome,” stated Flavia Fernandes.
And the zoo has provided a place for everyone to come together.
“It’s one of the most special places in Abilene for the community to gather that is just perfect for every age no matter what,” commented Craig Fisher who sits on the the Abilene Zoo board of directors.
And while that’s true, the biggest fans, may be the smallest people, so we talked to them.
“My favorite part about the zoo is that I get to see all the animals,” stated one zoo goer.
“My favorite part about the zoo is seeing the giant turtle,” stated another.
“I like going to the giraffes,”commented another.
And the fact that the zoo was 50 was a little shocking to some of them.
“I can’t believe it’s so old,” stated one.
According to the zoo’s director, the zoo has more than a few years left in the tank.
“I’m positive the Abilene Zoo will be around in 50 years,” commented Bill Gersonde, the director.
