After the blizzard that paralyzed Lubbock last year, the City created a new snow policy with the hopes to prevent it from happening again.

The policy states, “In order for a snow and ice removal program to be effective, a written policy must be established.”

The idea is that we should learn lessons from what happened last year and make sure we avoid the same mistakes, concerns, whatever as we move forward,” Mayor Dan Pope said.

The six page-long policy includes “Determination of need for snow and ice control procedures”, “Snow and Ice Control Policy”, “Ice Control”, “Snow Removal”, and “Outside Assistance” sections.

“That policy talks about how we’re going to prioritize roads, snow plow, and how we’re going to go about it and when we’re going to initiate it,” Pope said.

Pope added a few new multipurpose vehicles with snow specific equipment were purchased. As well as, updated equipment to the Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport.

The City had a snow policy set before, but Pope said this is a new and improved version of that policy.

Although this policy was motivated by severe snow, Pope added it will also be used for other heavy weather conditions.

“We also need to talk about how we’re going to communicate about storms. We need to talk about what our relationship will be with TXDOT with the sheriff’s office, and what it will be with Tech and what it will be with the county,” Pop said.
