Nearly a dozen East Lubbock teenagers spending part of their summer on a farm.
“I thought it would be interesting to go outside and not just stay up in the house all summer,” said camper, Keyon King.
The “Garden Initiative” is a pilot program designed by the East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood.
“It’s very safe to say that most of these kids wouldn’t be spending their summer time in a garden, in fact that’s one of the reasons why we do it – because they don’t always have a lot of things to do and we don’t want them to be in trouble doing things that they shouldn’t be doing,” said Michele Cook, with the East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood.
The program allows them to work in the garden at Grub Farm and takes them on field trips to different businesses and museums, including many that deal with agriculture. The program ends in November when the campers will decide what to do with the fruits and vegetables of their labor.
