The Lady Chaps basketball team was greeted with a hero’s homecoming Wednesday morning at the Rip Griffin Center, making for a storybook ending to the perfect season.
“Living it up with these girls, it’s been awesome, a crazy ride and just to come out on top after all that we’ve been through has been amazing,” sophomore forward Tess Bruffey said.
Dozens of supporters lined the parking lot, decked out in school colors and holding signs in support of their undefeated ‘chap-ions.’
“We had seen our fan base on social media and everything and I knew there would be a few people but this is overwhelming,” Bruffey said. “This is awesome, we’re so grateful and so blessed.”
“To have the opportunity to experience what they experienced, to show the kind of dedication and perseverance they showed is truly remarkable,” LCU President Tim Perrin said. “So for them, this is a lifetime of memories.”
US Congressman Randy Neugebauer was also in the crowd. He said he’s proud the team getting the recognition it deserves.
“Girls know how to play basketball out here in West Texas,” Congressman Neugebauer said. “It’s a great example for younger girls who are starting to dribble a little bit. They see these young women win a National Championship, so it’s a role model and I think we’ll reap the benefits of that in the future.”
The Lady Chaps said they’re grateful to the community for its support on this journey. And after playing the perfect season, the women are excited for what’s next.
“Lunch and then a nap, then pedicures! Celebrate just enjoy it and soak up the win,” Bruffey said.
The party will continue Thursday night at the Rip Griffin Center. A celebration is plan with guest speakers and other surprises, start time is slated for 5:30.
