A tradition held for 26 years, the Lewis sisters meet every summer on the second week of July for a very important reason. As young girls, the sisters remember their mother always met with her five other sisters, once a year. When their mother died in 1987, the sisters decided to carry their mother’s tradition on, to honor her. Sister Winnie Paul says she looks forward to this time every year.

“Our mom and her sisters would get together and go out of town, they wouldn’t take their husbands, they wouldn’t take us, it was the sisters only. ” said Paul

Each year the sisters meet in a new location, alternating from Chorpus Christi, Fort Worth, and Lubbock. The oldest daughter Mary Daniels said that Lubbock has a special place in their heart because their 90 year old father still lives here. They sing gospel with him, and credit him for their musical abilities.

“That’s where we got our singing from was from dad,” said Daniels.  “His voice now.. He still sounds like he’s in his fifties I mean.. a young man.”

The sisters have sang in churches around town, and have even had the pleasure of opening for gospel singer Shirley Ceaser. Middle sister, Sherry Thomas said that in order for their to be peace in the world, there must be peace within the family. She said their family stays together through prayer, music, and love.

“Music means something.. because the joy that comes from music or to encourage someone with a song, it means so much,” said Thomas.  “We made a group because we felt like, somebody has to hear our song.”
