The United Family today [Tuesday] delivered a total of 116,146 pounds of food to eight food banks in the company’s service areas. The contribution will provide more than 96,000 meals to approximately 32,000 families throughout West Texas, Dallas-Fort Worth and Eastern New Mexico. The donation is part of The United Family’s yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary of United Supermarkets, the company’s flagship banner.

The United Family donated 14,518 pounds (seven pallets) of food to each of the following food banks:

  • South Plains Food Bank in Lubbock
  • High Plains Food Bank in Amarillo
  • North Texas Food Bank in Dallas-Fort Worth
  • West Texas Food Bank in Midland-Odessa
  • Wichita Falls Area Food Bank in Wichita Falls
  • Food Bank of West Central Texas in Abilene
  • Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico in Clovis
  • Concho Valley Regional Food Bank in San Angelo

“Each day we get the pleasure of serving our guests by offering quality food in our stores, but it is equally as important to us to serve those who may need an extra hand,” said Robert Taylor, president of The United Family. “We are honored to partner with these local food banks and provide support throughout the communities we serve.”

The food items were specifically selected to provide nutritional value to the families receiving the donation, and include pinto beans, pasta sauce and creamy peanut butter, among other items. These items provide nutrients beneficial for lowering the risk of heart disease and cancer, and are also good sources of protein, fat and fiber.

Through a year of celebration, The United Family is giving back to their communities in spades. To kick off the year in January, the company pledged to donate $100,000 to schools in their communities. In April, more than 140,000 pounds of apples were donated to local food banks through Take A Bite out of Hunger, and May 31 – Sept. 7 the company is donating $1,000 to a local charity for 100 consecutive days, as part of their ‘100 Days of Giving Campaign.’ To round out the year The United Family will donate 1,200 special 100th Anniversary stuffed animals to children’s hospitals in 12 markets just before Thanksgiving.
