Car and home burglaries are what most would expect, but lately thieves in the Key City have been getting more creative. Some are going as far as taking plants from homeowner’s yards.
“Random things are coming up missing from the neighborhood that you usually don’t have to worry about coming up missing,” says James Smith, River Oaks resident.
An Althea bush was stolen right out of the yard of a River Oaks Circle homeowner. She says to her, it wasn’t just a bush, but a plant with sentimental value. The plant had blossomed this year like she hadn’t seen before and reminded her of her late grandmother, also named Althea.
The thief filled the hole back up with mulch as if there were never even a plant there.
“When it came to the bush, it was really sad, a little disheartening to lots of people in the neighborhood that people would go to that point to take something out of the ground in someone’s yard,” said Laura King, a neighbor in the River Oaks Circle community.
Others that live on River Oaks Circle say the best thing you can do to help prevent things like this are to be more aware of your surroundings and more familiar with your neighbors.
“If you don’t know your neighbors or the people around you, then get to know those people because you can look out for one another, especially with children and things that are going on, it just brings a sense of community,” says King
King is working towards getting the neighborhood watch program up and running again to help prevent plant theft. She also would like to encourage others to get acquainted with the people in their neighborhoods. Also, creating email lists or Facebook groups for neighbors to stay in the know with what’s going on or coming up.
