Volunteer firefighters in Floyd County spent several hours battling a house fire in Lockney Saturday morning. The Mendoza family had 13 family members in the house, visiting for the new year– all who managed to escape from the fire without injuries.
Chief Donny McLaughlin told EverythingLubbock.com his department was dispatched around 5:30 a.m. to the house fire along Farm-to-Market Road 378, just off U.S. Highway 70.
Head investigator, Deputy Matthew Arguello with the Floyd County Sheriff’s department said he heard an explosion sound that morning.
“Typically we hear a semi tire blow up, it’s something that’s common around here, but this one just didn’t feel right.” Arguello said.
He said it took crews nearly six hours to contain the fire due to shifting winds.The Lockney Volunteer Fire Department and the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office report the home as a total loss.
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, the State Fire Marshall will be assisting in the investigation, by bringing arson dogs to the home on Tuesday morning to try to determine the exact cause.
