The National Weather Service on Monday issued a tornado watch until 10 pm for Lubbock and areas to the east of Lubbock including Childress, Memphis, Paducah, Post, Aspermont, Guthrie, Floydada, and Crosbyton.
A watch means conditions are possible for tornadoes to develop. A tornado warning – if one is issued – would mean a tornado has been spotted.
Severe thunderstorms began to form Monday afternoon on the South Plains with reports of large hail in Petersburg. Some of the images sent by viewers seemed to depict hail stones larger than golf balls.
The NWS said golf ball size hail was reported in Floydada.
As of 7:15 p.m. radar estimates of rainfall totals were 2 inches or less. The heaviest rainfall totals were to the northeast of Lubbock.
