Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) contractor Kiewit Infrastructure is scheduled to begin work to make improvements to the US 82 (Parkway Drive) mainlanes beginning Tuesday, July 5. The work will require eastbound traffic to be place onto the frontage road-as one-way traffic.

“Switching traffic onto the frontage road will allow our contractor to safely expedite the work and minimize the impacts to traffic prior to school beginning in August,” said Edward Sewell, P.E., TxDOT Interim Lubbock Area engineer. “This new pattern will have the eastbound frontage road as one-way traffic. Additionally, Zenith Avenue will be closed to thru-traffic at this time. Drivers will be able to get onto the frontage roads, but they will not be able to cross US 82/Parkway Drive to get onto Zenith.”

Traffic is expected to remain on the frontage road until late-August.

Motorists can anticipate additional traffic changes in the near future and are reminded that both east- and westbound US 82 traffic has been reduced to 35 mph through the construction zone. Drivers are also urged to use caution when driving through the work zone, since crews will be working in close proximity to traffic and should keep the following tips in mind:

  • Slow down and always follow posted work zone speed limits. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes. Remember, traffic fines double in work zones.
  • Pay attention. Workers and heavy equipment may only be a few feet from passing vehicles.
  • Be patient. Delays from roadway construction can be frustrating, but it only takes a few extra minutes to slow down for a work zone.

The project is anticipated to be completed in late-October 2016.
