A train derailed Monday night near Highway 114 three miles west of Smyer. Hockley County Sheriff’s Deputies and officials with the rail company were on scene. They were observed going into the derailed cars with flashlights to inspect.
The West Texas & Lubbock Railway operates the railroad.
One eyewitness said nine cars derailed. A reporter at the scene said it was 6 to 10 cars. No injuries were reported. Traffic along the highway was not tied up.
