Trash Filled Parks Cause Concern

Sharon Jones was at Maxey Park on the Fourth of July kayaking when she saw a turtle, except it wasn’t a turtle but a plastic bag. She spent hours cleaning the lake before she filled a truck bed full of trash.

“What I’ve been seeing with the lakes in Lubbock from the street as you drive by, the view you might think it looks really pretty, but when you get up close it is not pretty,” Jones said.

The wildlife in the lake is her main concern. The bottles, plastic bags and trash could be a hazard for those animals.

“My concern is it’s just not going to get any better, it’s just going to get worse and what is going to happen to the wildlife in the lake or the birds when they enjoy the water,” Jones said.

Jones also said she knows the city is doing what it can but she just wishes it were more.

“I would like to see the city extend their services from not only picking up the trash on the grass around the lakes but maybe moving in toward the banks of the lake and picking up the trash there,” Jones said.

Jones hopes that in the future the city will fine people who leave their trash.
