The East Side Arts Camp is an end of summer program for kids from East Lubbock to get in touch with their creative side through song, dance, and art projects.
The theme of the camp was “Fairytales and Fables” which meant the kids we’re singing old folk songs and creating their own castles and “stain glass” window creations on wax paper.
Jared Strange, the Arts Coordinator for the East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood Grant, said they wanted to give kids a chance to be creative without being in a classroom.
“The camp is designed to serve kids who might have limited access to these programs, especially during the summer,” Strange said. “For the past couple of years we could have filled camp twice over, but only 13 percent of the people who applied had kids in extra curricular arts activities during the year so we hope to kind of fill a gap for a lot of these kids and get them into a program that might not be accessible.”
Strange said he hoped what the kids learned at the camp would stay with them after they leave.
“We want the also to develop as good citizens and as good people so character building is just as important as artistic skill building here,” Strange said. “So we hope that they’ve learned a lot, we hope that they’ve developed their skills, that they’ve tried some really cool projects, and made some awesome stuff. But we also hope that they walk away a little bit wiser, and a little bit stronger and hopefully with a lot of new friends.”
