Last week we gave you all a lot of tips on how to take care of your yard, but how can you protect your yard from bugs.

No matter how good your lawn looks, if your plants have been attacked by pests, the appearance of your lawn will suffer. Here are some DIY recipes to protect your plants from pests in your yard.

One easy way to keep bugs off your plants is to spray a little soapy water on them. The natural fatty acids in the soap will dissolve the outer coating or shell of many insects, and will eventually kill them.

It can help with managing all kinds of different bugs including scale, mites and thrips. All you need for this is to put one teaspoon of natural dish soap into a quart sized spray bottle and top off with water. Spray on insect infested areas, and repeat whenever pests are present.

If soap just isn’t cutting it, you can add a hot pepper and garlic to scare the bugs away. The garlic and pepper make the plants less appealing and tasty to the pests while the soap helps kill them off.

For this recipe you’ll need to chop the garlic and hot pepper and put them in a blender with a cup of water and puree until smooth. Let the mixture steep for at least an hour and strain it to remove solid pieces. Then, pour the resulting juice into a quart sized spray bottle, add a teaspoon of soap, and top it off with water.
