At this point in the summer, flower beds can sometimes look dull and beaten down by the summer heat.

No matter how much you water your flowers, the blooms on perennial’s only last so long, and usually by this point in the summer their time has past. So how can you keep the flower bed looking fresh and fun through the summer and into the fall months?

First, pick up some flowers that will do well through the end of the summer. Mums, Russian sage and coneflowers are all great options of perennials to plant around this time of year to bring back some life to your flower bed.

But remember, just because you plant the new flowers, it doesn’t mean your work is done. Maintenance is key to having beautiful flowers, especially during the hot, late summer months.

Putting mulch down in your flower bed can conserve water and protect a flower’s root systems from the heat, but don’t worry to much about using fertilizer during this part of the year. Flower roots under high heat won’t benefit from fertilizer, in fact, it might hurt them.
