Texas Tech partnered with the Texas High Plains Cotton Industry in support of the annual Celebrate Cotton Game at Jones Stadium.

For the past five years, Texas Tech has asked fans to wear white to the annual game to recognize the relationship between cotton farmers and the Lubbock community.

“So whenever people come to the game today, they’re going to see all of these bales,” Plains Cotton Industry Director of Communications Mary Jane Buerkle said. “They’re going to see these large pieces of equipment and they’re hopefully going to understand where their cotton clothing comes from and how this area helps make that happen.”

Cotton is one of the leading crops in West Texas, and Buerkle said this is a fantastic way to foster the relationship between two leading names in the Hub City.

“It is a very significant part of our agricultural industry in this area and certainly as it relates to the state and the nation as well,” Buerkle said.

Buerkle added that Lubbock ranked number one for production in 2014, with Gaines county leading for 2016.

“The top 11 cotton producing counties in the whole nation are within 80 miles of Lubbock,” Buerkle said. “Lubbock is actually in the top five.”
