A Lubbock doctor is on the forefront of ground breaking Alzheimer’s research at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center.

Inside the lab researchers are working on new treatment that will help those with Alzheimer’s disease.

“I’m trying to study the area missing by Alzheimer’s and mental health,” said Dr. Arubala Reddy.

Dr. Reddy was awarded a $99,952 grant to fund her research of protective effects of SSRI against Alzheimer’s.

The group of researchers are hoping to develop therapeutic strategies to treat depression in patients with this kind of dementia.

Dr. Reddy said she and her team are hopeful and on the right track for a cure.

“I always like to bring some out of the box ideas and because Alzheimer’s Association is supporting those kinds I’m really thankful,” said Dr. Reddy.

Alzheimer’s Association aims to support early-career scientist who have new and innovative approaches to treating the disease that affects more than five million Americans.

“More people die from Alzheimer’s disease than breast cancer or colon cancer combined, that’s terrifying” said Abby Reed, Associate Area Director for the Alzheimer’s Association.

The Alzheimer’s Association in Lubbock is working to help fund research like Dr. Reddy’s through local events.

“The money goes to finding a cure and local support groups, local education outreach and really getting the word out about Alzheimer’s and really letting people know who are affected,” said Reed.

The Alzheimer’s Association in Lubbock is continuing their fundraising efforts which will lead up to their annual Blondes Vs. Brunettes game on June 11 at People’s Bank Stadium in Wolfforth.
