The Texas Department of Public Safety said Friday in a brief written statement, “The Texas Rangers are currently assisting the Lynn County Sheriff’s office in the death of two children. No one has been arrested and the investigation is on going.”

The mother of two Lubbock children told KLBK News and EverythingLubbock.com, “It was a murder suicide north of Tahoka late last night.”

Residents in Tahoka said it was at a roadside park.

The mother of the children, Cybil Contreras, is an employee of Covenant Health System which issued a statement.

It said, “Our family at Covenant Health is saddened by the heartbreaking situation involving the family of one of our own. Our thoughts and our prayers go out to them as well as our Covenant colleagues during this tragic time.”

Contreras said, “It was a murder suicide north of Tahoka late last night. If you’re going to run this story I would like something good to come of it: I would like you to add that donations to the Ronald McDonald house in the names of Garett and Avery Contreras are appreciated.”

DPS has not yet confirmed names or other details.

“There was a divorce pending,” said J. Phillip Hays, the attorney for the mom in the divorce case. “This is tragic for everyone involved, both family and friends, acquaintances, and people they work with.  It’s been very hard on everybody.”

Neighbors of the Contreras family shared their memories of Garrett and Avery.

“My son who is 3 and their little boy who is 5, played together at least once a week,” neighbor Eric Finley said. “Sometimes even more.”

Finley said his children were close in age to Garrett and Avery. He said just two weeks ago Garrett learned to ride his bike without his training wheels on their street.

“Just sweet little kids,” Finley said. “Loved seeing them play with ours. So those are some sweet memories I will have.”

Contreras had told Finley she and her husband were getting divorced but Finley said he never asked why. He figured she would tell them in her own time.

While Finley was aware of the problems the Contreras’ were having at home, he said he never imagined something like this would happen.

“It’s a shock up and down I think this whole block,” Finley said. “I’ve already talked to a few of our neighbors this morning and the thought is ‘What can we do?’ Our hearts our broke. We love you and we love your family. And we are so very sorry that this happened but we will always be here for you and if there is anything we can do for you let us know.”

Contreras told EverythingLubbock.com she would like the community to make a donation to the Lubbock Ronald McDonald house in Garrett and Avery’s honor.

“She is aware of the tragedies people go through when they need healthcare and so she has got them in mind,” Finley said. “And we are certainly going to help in that regard. We really do ask people to join us and help as well.’
