Friday Lt. Governor Dan Patrick sent a letter to all public universities in Texas to request that universities release information on tuition amounts. Universities are considering raising student tuition in Texas when tuition debt is already high. Patrick wants to see if there is an answer to how to effectively reduce the amount of tuition instead of raising it.

Patrick also requested plans from universities to make sure students actually graduate.

According to CollegeScholarships.org, a college student who graduates with a four-year degree is on average in debt by $26,600. The amount is even higher for students who pursue a masters degree with an on average debt of $43,500.

Patrick said, “Higher education institutions must identify ways to make college education more affordable for students and families across Texas.”

Records are being requested as far back as the 2002-2003 school year. This school year is specific, because before this school year Texas Legislature had the authority to set a maximum tuition limits across the entire state.
