Texas Department of Transportation said a major plan in the works would eliminate many of the unraveling roadways near South Loop 289 that drivers labeled “dangerous.”
TxDOT said details about a road improvement project along the S. Loop frontage roads would be announced. The project was estimated to cost $6.6 million, a TxDOT spokesperson told EverythingLubbock.com
TxDOT informed us about the project, after our story aired addressing the driving conditions near the South Loop.
“We’ll be milling off the top two inches of the frontage roads and coming back and laying a hot mixture, surface from the runway,” said Dianah Ascencio, public information officer for TxDOT’s Lubbock district.
Because of the asphalt that TxDOT will use, “the optimal conditions are warm conditions,” Ascencio said. Construction would begin in late spring or early summer if the project goes according to the original plan, she said.
The portions of roadway that would be fixed include the frontage roads, both eastbound and westbound, stretching from Interstate 27 to just west of Slide Road, Ascencio explained.
Ascencio said the last time that specific area was resurfaced was approximately three years ago.
“Every few years we have to go back and maintain the system that we already have in place,” she said.
“You have over 100,000 vehicles traveling South Loop in that area every single day,” she mentioned.
“We have to prioritize which roadways we get to work on this year, and which roadways we get to work on next year,” she added. “Fortunately, we have a project on South Loop that should begin in the next few months to take care of some of the rough spots.”
