Lubbock Police is asking for help searching for two suspects involved in a robbery early Friday morning.
Police responded to a robbery call at about 2:45 a.m. on the 1200 block of North Chicago. There they said an Uber driver was parked and waiting for a potential customer when two men approached his vehicle.
“As he was sitting there two individuals, two males, approached his vehicle,” LPD’s Tiffany Pelt said. “They were wearing masks that covered from their nose down. At that point, the victim told us that one of the suspects pointed a gun at them, told him to get out of the car.”
Pelt added that once the driver got out of his vehicle, the suspects started asking for money.
“He said he didn’t have any so they started going through his wallet, going through his vehicle,” Pelt said. “They figured out he in fact did not have any cash on him. At that point, one of the suspects smashed his cell phone while the other threw his key into a nearby cotton field, assuming that would prevent him from getting away or calling the police. Then the suspect then took off down the road with his wallet.”
Police said the victim searched for his keys in the cotton field for 30 minutes before calling police.
Now other Uber drivers in the area are cautious for what shift to sign up for.
“I’m definitely going to buck up my situation and really pay attention to who I’m picking, what area I’m in,” Uber Driver Brady Germany said.
German added that he is changing some of his strategy before accepting a new customer because of the robbery.
“I’ll definitely look at the profile a little more,” Brady said. “Look at the rating a little more, because the rating matters. But all you can really do is just hope for the best.”
