A Hobbs man is dead after a family dispute in the 200 block of E. Aspen in Hobbs, New Mexico. On Saturday, December 3, 2016, at approximately 2:39 PM, the Hobbs Police Department responded to a home in reference to a person being shot. Upon arrival of officers, they located Zachariah Fields, age 31, inside the residence suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Hobbs Fire Department EMS responded; however, Fields died as a result of his injuries while on the scene.

The victim’s uncle, Michael Johnson, age 49 of Hobbs, was detained as a result of the investigation. Johnson was subsequently arrested for 2nd Degree Murder and is being held at the Hobbs City Jail on $50,000 cash or surety bond. Fields will be taken to the Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque, New Mexico for an autopsy.
