The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a crash between an Iraan-Sheffield ISD school bus and semi-truck in Howard County Friday night.
The accident occurred on Interstate 20 west of Big Spring, at mile marker 173, around 10:45 p.m.
Authorities said the semi-truck was traveling eastbound on the interstate behind a passenger car. The passenger car slammed on its brakes. The semi-truck veered to the right to avoid colliding with the passenger car. The driver of the semi-truck lost control and crossed the center media into the westbound lames of the interstate. The semi-truck then struck the school bus.
A spokesman for Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Big Spring reported the accident victims were transported to their medical facility. Four of those accident victims were later transported to a hospital in Lubbock.
The Department of Public Safety has confirmed one person died Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The victim was identified as Elizabeth Pope, 52, of Iraan. Iraan-Sheffield ISD confirmed Pope was a sponsor of the cheering team.
University Medical Center in Lubbock confirmed Saturday afternoon they had received four patients from the traffic accident. This information was revised from their earlier statement of two patients.
UMC reported Saturday afternoon that three patients remain at the hospital. One of the victims was treated and discharged. The hospital said two of the victims are in critical condition and the third was in satisfactory condition.
The DPS accident report stated that there were two adults and six teenagers on the school bus. There were two people in the semi-truck.
