Lubbock Police arrested James Albert Pritchard, 49, of Lubbock early Monday. On Sunday evening police responded to a crash at 50th and Indiana Avenue.
A pickup truck smashed into the back of a motorcycle at the intersection.
Police said, “The driver of the motorcycle, Sammy Castaneda – 50, was taken to University Medical Center where he later died.”
Court records showed Pritchard was arrested for DUI on August 28. Police stopped him at 34th Street and Indiana Avenue. During the August 28 stop, police pinned his pickup truck between police units to stop him from driving.
Also during the August 28 stop, police documented eight beer cans. One was un-opened and another three-quarters full until police emptied them.
Back in June of 2013, police responded to 400 North University and arrested Pritchard for DUI after a traffic accident. Prichard pleaded guilty and spent five days in jail for the 2013 arrest.
Police released the following written statement:
Last night, Sunday, September 18, 2016 at approximately 6:25 p.m., patrol officers responded to report of a motor vehicle crash at 50th Street and Indiana Ave.
A 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle was stopped at the red light on 50th Street facing eastbound when it was rear-ended by a 2011 Ford F150 pickup. The impact sent both vehicles into the middle of the intersection where they crashed with two other vehicles that were traveling northbound on Indiana Ave. The driver of the motorcycle, Sammy Castaneda – 50, was taken to University Medical Center where he later died.
The driver of the Ford F-150 suffered minor injuries was taken to UMC. Officers had probable cause to believe the driver was under the influence of alcohol and the influence contributed to the crash. After his release from UMC, he was arrested and transported to the Lubbock County Detention Facility and booked in.

The Lubbock Police Department Accident Investigation Team is continuing to investigate the crash.
