A Pecos man mauled to death by a pack of Pit Bulls prompted the city to make changes to its animal laws.
“Pit Bulls, German Shepherd’s, Rottweiler’s, you name it,” said Pecos City Manager Eric Honeyfield.
‘Beware of Dog’ signs popped up in Pecos almost two weeks ago, when 83-year-old, Norberto Legarda, was mauled to death by a pack of pit bulls.
“If my dog was to attack someone unprovoked, I’d probably put it down,” said Pecos resident Jason Bass.
The attack caused council to make some changes to their animal ordinance.
“If a dog makes an unprovoked attack, it can be declared as dangerous,” said Honeyfield. “It either must be put down or the owner must obtain a $100,000 liability policy,” said Honeyfield.
Some Pecos pet owners agree and said it’s only fair.
“The least you can do is take out insurance on the dog because you wouldn’t want this happening again,” said Honeyfield.
City Manager Eric Honeyfield said the town euthanizes more than 50 animals a month, pushing them to take an even closer look at another part of the ordinance.
“It seems like we’re kind of weak in the spay neuter program. We’re kind of not near as intense as we ought to be,” said Honeyfield.
