Since 1975, the Voice of Hope: Rape Crisis Center of Lubbock has helped hundreds of survivors of sexual assault and rape cases move forward in their lives, but now they’re calling on the community for more volunteers.
In 2015, 376 cases of sexual assault were reported in Lubbock to the Voice of Hope, not including the hundreds of other cases that go unreported.
To help these individuals cope and recover, volunteers with the center meet with them one-on-one for counseling and even attend hospital visits and court trials with them as well.
“I kinda look at it as an opportunity to help somebody on one of their worst days of their lives, and it is very rewarding when you can be that small hope, glimmer of hope for someone, that small piece of healing for someone,” said Leslie Timmons, the community educator and volunteer coordinator for Voice of Hope.
Currently, the center has 25 volunteers. Throughout the month of September, the center will be holding sessions for prospective volunteer advocates.
Shelby Cargill, the now assistant director and case manager for the center, began as a volunteer in 2011 with the center. She says the rewarding experience of helping the survivors and their families is what made her want to stay.
“It was just rewarding knowing that when somebody needs help, you’re there to answer their questions to make sure they get the right help,” said Shelby Cargill. “It’s very eye opening about what is really going on in the community, but it makes you aware of things that are going on too so that way you can educate other people about what’s going on and if you ever have a friend or family member who actually needs our services, you’re able to help them too.”
To volunteer, you must be 18 years of age or older and must be able to pass a criminal background check.
