The deadline to get registered for the November 2016 election is coming up on October 11.

“We have a responsibility to register voters throughout the community, throughout the year in Lubbock County,” Isabel Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez is a co-president of the League of Women Voters in Lubbock County.

Gutierrez said on National Voter Registration Day at the end of September, they were very busy.

“We were out at the Student Union Building at Texas Tech University and we registered 100 students, in addition to handing out voter registration cards,” Gutierrez said.

If someone took a registration card, they just need to get it in by October 11.

“If they need to change their name, gotten married or divorced, changed their address, or if they’re new to Lubbock, they’ve got to get that done, that is the drop dead deadline,” Dorothy Kennedy with the Lubbock County Elections Office said.

Kennedy said people can go by the elections office at 1308 Crickets Avenue in downtown Lubbock to register to vote, but that’s not the only place people can find registration cards.

“We’ll also have forms at the libraries and the post offices, they just need to make sure they get date stamped with that October 11 deadline,” she said.

When you head to the polls to vote, Kennedy said you will still need to bring some form of identification.

“We’ve been told been from the Secretary of State, who is the Chief Elections Official, is photo ID is still in place, so the workers are going to ask for that first off,” Kennedy said. “If somebody doesn’t have a photo ID, they can still come in to vote, but they get to have some other criteria that they can bring, like a current utility bill or current bank statement.”

Election Day is November 8 and early voting runs from October 24 to November 4. More information can be found on VoteLubbock.org or VoteTexas.gov.
