Warmer temperatures have folks wanting to get a jump on their lawn care but experts tell us it’s still too early to fertilize.
“We’ve got an email come in today that shows that they want their lawn fertilized, well we answered them back yeah we’ll put you on the list. When it comes time to do your fertilization we will do it.”
The weather is nice now but there is still a chance for a hard freeze.
“Let’s say you start getting some plants starting to bud or bloom and then you get a cold spell come in and kill them. You think it’s good and everything is starting to bloom and then if you get a hard freeze that’s not good.”
Cindy Pegues at Holland Gardens tells us the best thing you can do right now is weed prevention.
“Well right now what we’re doing is trying to put a pre-emergent down before all these weeds do come up, and with the warm temperatures, and the little bit of rain that we have had, we are getting some weeds that are already creeping up.”
If you’re going to use pre-emergent do it sooner rather than later. Star Landscaping recommends liquid spray.
“You could spray it, if you are out there spraying it and you don’t have any dye you don’t know where you’ve sprayed but if you put a dye in it, it shows you where you have sprayed your yard. That way you won’t over spray it. Basically like I said, that is a prevention of weed growth in your yard. “
Holland Gardens says granule prevention is just as effective.
“One of the things that we like is this A-Vert right here because it lasts a little bit longer than your other pre-emergents”
