Everything is bigger in Texas, including the clap back.
On May 11, the last day of Teacher Appreciation Week, YouTube “star” Jake Paul released a music video titled, “My Teachers” which he described as a “teacher diss track.”
The attempt at a rap song (that would make Dr. Dre and Tupac cringe) starts off with the class throwing wads of paper at the teacher, as Paul can be heard saying, “I’m a millionaire, but I ain’t use nothin’ in my life that the teachers taught me.” (Apparently, he “ain’t been” paying attention in English class.)
Then, the 21-year-old goes into the profound chorus:
My teachers never taught me that
How to deal with this or that
How to make my papers stack
How to get a DM back
How to buy a Lambo cash
As of Monday, the video had nearly 8,700,000 views.
However, after seeing Paul’s video online, a coach and teacher at Hawley High School, Matt Preston, decided to dust off his rap skills and publish a response track to the song.
Preston, who goes by m.a.double online, released the video on May 22.
The video, filmed at Hawley High School, begins with Preston in his classroom saying, “Yeah, I make about $35K a year,” before he gets into his flow:
My students know I got they back
So, don’t be dissing me just cause your teacher was whack
I may not count stacks or drive in a Cadillac
But, I do it for the kids and they know that’s a fact
First off, let me say congratulations
You’ve got a platform and you’re reaching kids across the nation
But with great power, comes great responsibility
You’re killing me Peter Parker with all of this hostility
Let’s have a conversation
Because most of the teachers I know don’t like cookie-cutter education
So please don’t throw the baby out with the bath
All because you had a bad experience in math
A few bad apples don’t make the grove bad
Some of these kids see me more than their own dad
So just because you show up on their screen
Don’t belittle my influence and ability to intervene
Cause I don’t see Jake Paul in the hallways
I don’t see him in the stands at their ballgames
But I’m here like every day, bro
So, how you gonna diss me with that Disney Channel flow
My students know I got they back
So, don’t be dissing me just cause your teacher was whack
I may not county stacks or drive in a Cadillac
But, I do it for the kids and they know that’s a fact
It’s clear Preston’s vocabulary is much more extensive than Paul’s, as he’s able to create more complex rhymes as opposed to Paul’s “stack” and “back.”
As of Monday, Preston’s video had more than 237,000 views and even received praise from Paul’s older brother, Logan.
I think I speak for all of us when I say, Preston for the WIN! Jimmy Ivione, sign him to Interscope, stat!
