A water main broke in downtown Lubbock early Thursday morning.

According to Wood Franklin, the city’s Director of Public Works, it was an eight inch water main that broke. He said no one was working in the area and that it was a “fatigued pipe.”

As of 8:45 Thursday morning, Broadway to 13th St., Texas Ave. to Ave. J were all without water, as the water was shut off so the leak would be stopped. Franklin said that area is also closed to traffic while the repairs are taking place.

Franklin said crews were working to repair the problem.

Water Main Break on Broadway Ave.

There was water main break in Broadway between Avenue J and Texas Avenue around 6am this morning. City of Lubbock Pipeline Crews are on site and working to repair the leak. The water has been shut off in the immediate area while crews are working to repair the pipe. The broken pipe is an 8 inch cast iron pipe that apparently failed due to fatigue. Customers in the area between Avenue J, Texas Avenue, Broadway, and 13th Street may be without water until the pipe can be repaired. Broadway between Avenue J and Texas Avenue is closed. Please find alternate routes and slowdown in areas where crews are working.
