Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman pulled off his second elaborate escape through a tunnel out of prison near Mexico city Saturday night. Guzman is the head of the Sinaloa cartel, an international drug trafficking organization known to funnel drugs across the U.S. Mexico border.
Film maker Charlie Minn has visited Lubbock several times promoting his documentaries about crime in Mexico, his latest film focusing on whether or not El Chapo was even in jail to begin with..
“So many students are so curious about what’s going on just south of the border, a lot of people have friends and family in Mexico who live in Texas,” said Minn. “But this is a tragedy that has affected more people than one might think.”
Highway checkpoints and border crossing are increasing security. Minn said that’s with good reason as more than half the illegal drugs that enter into the U.S. come from Guzman’s cartel.
“Catching him again may never happen, because he is so well protected by his own people,” said Minn.
