For years, Canyon Independent School District has considered Kimbrough Memorial Stadium home to a lot of the district’s athletic events. But soon, it actually will be home.
“It now will become the venue of Canyon ISD for high school athletics,” Darryl Flusche, CISD Superintendent, said.
The stadium is currently owned by West Texas A&M University, but after plans to build a new football stadium on campus, the university would no longer need Kimbrough.
“Kimbrough is a Panhandle icon,” Walter Wender, WTAMU president, said. “People talk about Kimbrough as if it’s part of their family, and I don’t think anything that’s negative should ever happen to it.”
That’s why the university is transferring ownership to CISD.
Under the current lease, CISD is responsible for the maintenance of Kimbrough. That, of course, will continue — just like the population growth in the city of Canyon, which is where Flusche said the new stadium will be the biggest help.
“With the growth that’s on the horizon, that could mean that there might be future need for additional opportunities for high school teams to play,” Flusche said. “And securing that now puts us in place for a long time in the future.”
