Bonham Middle School 6th Grade Math Teacher Laura Penwell initiated an activity in class earlier this school year answering the question; “What I wish my teacher knew”.

With over 300 students, one response struck a chord in the 2 year educator.

“The note said, ‘I don’t have drinks at my home so can I have some milk for my mom, me, my twin brothers and two more please?, It’s heart wrenching,” said Penwell.

After addressing the response to Bonham’s Principal, Mrs. Penwell bought the student milk and fruit to take home.

“He gave me a hug and was on his way,” said Penwell.

The Education Foundation in Odessa shared a screen shot of the child’s response on their Facebook page, to show how harsh the reality of hunger in West Texas is.

“It’s not that they just want an extra snack or an extra cookie. They are hungry for food,” says Tine Corbett with the Food 2 Kids program with the West Texas Food Bank.

“These kids depend on donations form the community. It’s not exposing anything bad, at some point everyone needs help. People need to know there is help out there,” said Penwell.
