The Whitehouse, Texas Police Chief, Craig Shelton, surrendered himself to to the Smith County Jail Friday morning just after 10:30.  He was charged with assault causing bodily injury.

The chief and four other officers were placed on leave back in May for an unspecified incident that is under investigation by the Texas Rangers.

A Smith County Grand Jury met Wednesday and indicted Shelton.

Interim Whitehouse City Manager Stefani Wright  said on Thursday she will decide the fate of Chief Shelton on the same day information is released from the grand jury.

The city is also still waiting on the results from a third party investigation looking into actions taken by City Manager Kevin Huckabee and three police officers.

The investigation will determine whether any city policies were broken by four city employees during the incident back in May. When the results come to light, Interim Police Chief Dan Finklestein will make a decision about the officers involved.

The Whitehouse City Council will decide Huckabee’s job status.
