Saturday morning, runners and members of the community came out to participate in the 5th annual Willie McCool Memorial Run. The run included a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon options.
“It’s just heartwarming to see these people come out and be willing to do this in Willie’s name,” Barent McCool, Willie McCool’s father said.
Barent said most of their family try and make it out for the run but this year was special because it was the first time Sean McCool, Willie’s oldest son, was able to participate. Sean McCool said he was not able to make the other runs because he has been stationed overseas for the past four years.
“Well this is my first time getting to run the race, so I am really excited to be down here celebrating the legacy and memories,” Sean McCool said.
Barent said all of the proceeds from the race are donated to the students at Coronado High School, where Willie graduated from.
“Also there is the scholarship to preserve the memory and legacy of his work but to also see the money used towards education,” Sean said.
Both Barent and Sean said they plan on having the run here in Lubbock for many more years.
