The weather wasn’t exactly ideal on Lubbock Lemonade Day 2016* but that didn’t stop Tra Thomas from setting up his stand for the second straight year and selling his delicious drink.
“It’s cold, it’s freezing,” Tra said. “I’m just dancing around (to stay warm)!”
Tra, with his hat, gloves and jacket, set out to sell as much lemonade as possible. Stationed on the corner of 50th Street and University Avenue, he held signs advertising ‘Tra’s Cool Lemonade’. Tra said he didn’t only need the cash to make good on the $40 bank loan he took out to buy supplies, but he also had plans to donate some of the money to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
“Because they did something for me and so I’m paying them back,” he explained.
In 2014, Make-A-Wish granted Tra’s wish to go to Disney World. He and his family spent a week in Florida and years later, he still remembers the trip as “awesome”. His goal is to collect money for the non-profit so that it may continue to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.
*Lubbock Lemonade Day started in 2012. According to its website, the event works to empower today’s youth to become tomorrow’s entrepreneurs.
