Wish Wednesday: LCU Student Athletes Surprise Gary With Trip to Disney World

Lubbock Christian University’s student athlete’s pulled off another magical surprise by inviting 7-year-old Gary to watch LCU play against West Texas A&M.

“We had him come to a basketball game and reveal that he’s going to Disney World,” said Will Wehe, Vice President of the student athletic advisory committee.

Gary’s favorite Disney film “Cars” was his inspiration for the wish.

“He likes cars. He likes the movie cars. He drives Child Life at UMC crazy wanting them to give him cars movies,” said Kendra Bobo, Gary’s mom.

He’s a man of few words, but can’t wait to take off this spring break. “Excited”  is what Gary said he is for the trip.

Gary was born with gastroschisis. He had to go into surgery as soon as he was born where doctors took out his intestines.

“He was TP independent multiple line. Finally we had a transplant and he had his liver, pancreas, and small intestines transplanted two years ago,” said Bobo.

He’s seven now, and doing a lot better. Gary’s ready to go to Orlando and meet Lightning McQueen.

“He really loves ‘Cars’ and he’d been wanting to meet Mickey Mouse. We brought over ‘Cars’ and he goes, ‘I want to go meet Lightning McQueen and Mickey Mouse’ and he’d always been wanting to go there,” said Bobo.

A wish surprise that took several months to plan went off without a hitch. Thanks to his wish granters and the student athletes who raised nine thousand dollars to send him on the trip of a lifetime.

“Oh I can’t even describe it that was so neat. Just seeing the smile on his face like that was so incredible. I’m pretty sure he was about to cry. He was so overwhelmed it was awesome. It was fun to be a part of stuff like that,” said Wehe.

The student athletes did several things to raise the money, including working Texas Tech sporting events.
