For the last four years the students and staff at Littlefield High School have been working to raise $8,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
It’s a sweet showdown as bidders fight for the top prize, but this is not your average auction.
This one involves kids and cake. But before we get to that, these seniors at Littlefield High put in hard work on the football field last fall. The team went all the way to the playoffs. These players also know how to use flour, eggs, and sugar to make some delicious cakes for a long standing tradition.
For some of these players, their fathers and uncles took part in the tradition before them.
“It’s a Littlefield tradition I think we’ve been doing it for 55 years. So it’s something that the city looks forward to. You know these amazing cakes, the school gets involved and the classes are competing to try and get the biggest cake for the most money,” said Kaylee Edgemon, student council president.
The senior football players put their cakes on the auction block.
“It’s a German chocolate cake covered with chocolate covered strawberries,” said Nathan Hobbs, senior football player.
These cakes have been known to go for several hundred dollars.
“Oh Lord, who wouldn’t want to give about a $200 bill for something like that. I mean these guys have put a lot of work into all of this. There’s some great stuff here,” said Guyle Roberson, auctioneer.
Over the last three years Littlefield High School’s goal during the cake auctions were to raise enough money to send a child on their wish.
“We decided we would try to help someone with what we do here. And Make-A-Wish became our cause at that point in time. So we got a hold of Make-A-Wish. We raised a little over $2000 the first year for Make-A-Wish. We found out the average wish is about eight thousand dollars and that became our goal,” said Ricky Hobbs, Principal of Littlefield High School.
This year, the team raised more than $5000, which means these giving wildcats scored several extra points.
“It doesn’t seem like a long time, but when you look back you think wow we’ve done a lot of different fundraisers to get to where we are at. So it’s so exciting that we finally get to. I have a great feeling about this cake auction, that it’s going to go off and it’s going to be great and it’s so exciting. I’m so blessed to be able to experience this and so I’m so excited to make a kid’s wish come true,” said Kaylee Edgemon, student council president.
