If you’ve lived in Littlefield sometime during the last five decades, you’ve probably heard of the cake auction. The annual tradition is a collaboration between the Littlefield High School Student Council and the varsity football team. For the second year, the money raised at the event was donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“What we did was we had every single person make a cake and we had a guy come and we did an auction of all the cakes and just the main goal was to raise as much money as we could for the organization,” Kori Klein explained. “It’s kind of been a tradition we’ve done for many years.”

Klein is a senior at Littlefield High School and president of the Student Council. He said there were about 25 cakes donated to the auction, including a German chocolate cake that sold for $210.

“I just think it’s cool that they would have the heart to give that much money,” he said.

Klein also wanted to thank auctioneer J.W. Bitner, who has called the cake auction for decades. EverythingLubbock.com has learned that Bitner has since moved out of the area but has expressed interest in coming back to Littlefield for next year’s auction.

“He’s (Bitner) just been a big contribution to this event and I think he even bought a cake during the auction. He was kind of bidding for himself against someone else, it was kind of entertaining to watch!”

The auction, which was held in the gymnasium at Littlefield High School, raised nearly $2,400 for Make-A-Wish. Last year, the cake auction raised more than $1,100 for the non-profit. The money will go toward granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.
