After five months of practice and learning choreography, eight local celebrities are ready to compete this Saturday for the Waltzing for Wishes Gala. It’s the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s big fundraiser for the year.

The dancers are hoping to dazzle their way to send hundreds of South Plains kids on their dream trips.

Garret Young has never stepped foot on a ballroom floor until recently. Young and his partner have been practicing twice a week to perfect their salsa number.

“It’s a process. It’s been slow, but I’m putting in the time so I think it’s coming around,” said Young.

D’Venue Dance studio is volunteering their expert’s time and energy to help bring magic to kids right here on the South Plains.

“I love to spread the joy of dance around the community. To show people that anyone truly can do it. Waltzing for Wishes is one of the best ways to also help spread that out,” said D’Venue Dance studio owner, Debra Hollowell.

For Rosa Hernandez, she has the job of teaching Young how to dance the salsa. She says it’s been a breeze, but there are a few things they need to get down before competition day.

“So far so good, we’ve still got a couple of things to work on. We’re kind of polishing the end of it. Just working on the little details, technique and making sure we’re entertaining the audience of course,” said Hernandez

For Young, sashaying out of his comfort zone was an easy decision. “It’s a great cause, I believe in supporting the children. I mean what better foundation is there than Make-A-Wish, you know it’s kind of a no brainer for me.”

The celebrity portion isn’t the only entertainment for Saturday night. Children from Dance Warehouse are performing a piece called “Sail.”

They’ve been working really hard on it, and owner, Cassidy McCabe says this experience not only helps them perform in front of a crowd, these kids get to learn about what Make-A-Wish does for our community.

The dancers aren’t the only ones working to make the evening spectacular. The Fig and Flower is working hard to make about sixty arrangements to help decorate the ballroom.

They’re turning into a getaway at sea.

“It’s a really good cause, we want to help the community. The money stays in the community so we’re helping the local people. The Fig and Flower we’ve been open almost three years now. We’re doing great, we have home decor, fresh floral, we do weddings and events,” said Jodi Willeby, Design Manager.
