Ramsey said she first learned about the Make-A-Wish Foundation while she was in an Indiana hospital. At 15, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Less than two years later and living in Lubbock, the now 17-year-old had her wish granted. She spent one week half way around the world thanks to the non-profit.
“I knew I wanted to travel, I just didn’t know where,” Ramsey said.
After a little research, she landed on London. Make-A-Wish booked the flights and hotel and for one week, Ramsey and her family spent time taking in the sights and sounds of the city.
“The London Eye was pretty amazing,” Shawn, Ramsey’s dad, said. “The tour of Buckingham Palace was really amazing. It was definitely a dream come true for everybody because I don’t think otherwise we’d have even been able to do something like that.”
Ramsey said she enjoyed the entire trip but her favorite part was getting tickets to see Breakfast At Tiffany’s. She called the play “pretty fun”.
The family didn’t just bring home a suitcase full of tea, truffles and clothes. Shawn said they brought home a whole lot of memories too.
“Make-A-Wish provided big enough funds for us to be able to do everything we wanted, and to come back with souvenirs and extra stuff, so that was amazing,” Ramsey said.
“They (Make-A-Wish) covered it basically from doorstep to doorstep and we did not expect that so that was a very pleasant surprise,” Shawn added.
