EMS and the Department of Public Safety responded to a crash near Abernathy just before 12:30 pm along Farm to Market road 54 six miles west of Interstate 27.
According to a photojournalist, a Justice of the Peace was called to the scene. Later DPS confirmed a woman was ejected from a pickup truck and died at the scene. DPS said she was driving eastbound on FM 54, went off the roadway and over-corrected.
Late in the afternoon DPS released the following statement:
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a single-vehicle fatal rollover that occurred Friday in Hale County.
At approximately 12:20 p.m., Lola Elizabeth Thompson, 42, of Anton, was driving westbound on FM 54 about four miles west of IH-27 when the Dodge Pickup she was driving left the roadway. Thompson in an attempt to get back onto the road overcorrected which caused the pickup to roll. Thompson, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene by Karen Davis, Hale County Justice of the Peace. Next of kin has been notified.
Road conditions were dry along the two-lane road and no other vehicles were involved. The crash is still under investigation.
