Photos of a woman appearing in blackface as “Aunt Jemima” outside the Midland Academy Charter School surfaced online Monday afternoon.
“She had the head wrap on and the apron, and she was in complete blackface,” said parent Tracie Greene.
Greene said the woman was standing outside picking up her child.
“You could tell the teachers that were there to help our children cross the street were in shock,” Greene said. “When her kid came out, she actually covered her face in her arm and ran away from her mom.”
“It could be a joke in a small circle of people that know you, but when you’re out in public like that and you depict that; it’s offensive to everyone.”
West Texas NAACP Coordinator Gene Collins said he feels every African American will find the costume distasteful.
“It doesn’t shock me but what does bother me is the attitude of a country that now feels that this is appropriate behavior,” Collins said. “It just brings back old feelings and a feeling of regression in this country when it comes to race.”
The Midland Academy Charter school is under Councilman John Love’s district area; he said, “It’s disappointing and discouraging that this is how some people still feel towards African Americans.”
