Mario Ybarra announced his candidacy for re-election to the LISD Board of Trustees, District 1. Ybarra was appointed to the board in 2005 and has been re-elected twice by constituents of District 1. After 11 years on the board, Ybarra has seen significant improvements in the school district, both to facilities and academics.
“I am proud of my service to the children of Lubbock ISD. I want to continue working to make sure every child is equipped for success when they graduate, and teachers have the tools they need to be effective in the classroom,” Ybarra said. “The district has a vision for academic success with our Standards of Excellence and we have a long-range facilities plan to address the needs of our students in a way that is economically efficient,” he added.
One of the accomplishments of which Ybarra is most proud is the expansion of the district’s Mariachi program to include both Cavazos Middle School and Lubbock High School. “Many students have had the opportunity to learn more about the cultural traditions and musical expression of Mariachi through this program. I am really proud of this unique offering at Cavazos and Lubbock High,” Ybarra said.
Ybarra also noted the passage of the 2010 bond which provided improvements for every campus within Lubbock ISD in each of four areas: academic and school improvements; safety and security; athletics and fine arts; and technology. “We were able to touch every campus at least four times without a tax increase. I am very pleased by the progress we’ve made on campuses, while keeping our tax rate constant,” Ybarra noted.
In addition to serving on the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees for almost 11 years, Ybarra is also a member of the board of the Mexican-American School Board Association. He is an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and is married to Norma Ybarra. They have two adult children, Vicente and Marisa; both are Lubbock ISD graduates.
