“You Don’t Want to Mess With” New Texas Tech Coach Rusty Whitt

One thing comes across immediately when asking reporters who have covered Texas Tech’s newly-hired Strength & Conditioning Coach Rusty Whitt in the past: respect.

Whitt, former with the Army’s 10th Special Forces unit, spent over five years as the University of Louisiana-Lafayette’s Head Strength & Conditioning Coach.

In that time, he’s garnered that respect from his fellow coaches, colleagues, and his players for his work ethic and tough training techniques.

According to The Advocate’s Luke Johnson, the former Green Beret took his military training eventually to his players, sharpening their minds as well as their bodies for the rigors of Division 1 college football.

100-percent intensity,” said Johnson. ” He would make guys in the Louisiana heat, run up and down the stadium seats with gas masks [on]. And, you’ll be able to pick him out pretty quick, because he’ll be the only [coach] out there wearing combat boots [on the practice field].”

Whitt’s hometown is Azle, Tx., and he graduated from Abilene Christian University with his bachelor’s degree in 1994, according to his bio on RaginCajuns.com.
